Iain Black
Minister of Labour and Citizen Services
BC Liberal MLA for Port Moody-Westwood
On June 23, 2008, Iain was appointed to Cabinet as the Minister of Labour and Citizen Services.
Chris and I grew up in Manitoba but early in our careers – mine in technology, hers as a teacher – we chose to live in British Columbia. We moved to the West Coast in January 1994 and have lived in the Port Moody-Westwood riding since 2000, first in Port Moody and now in Coquitlam. We’ve found from experience that it is a terrific place to raise our three young children. And, from my coaching in Coquitlam youth soccer, among many other local activities, we know the people of Port Moody, Anmore, Belcarra and Coquitlam are diverse, warm, friendly, involved and deeply interested in their community.
I am proud that my community service extends beyond the boundaries of this riding to issues and organizations that impact the whole region and province. For example, as a Board Member of Canuck Place Children’s Hospice since 1999 I have helped ensure its survival – to the direct benefit of almost 70 families in our local health authority who are faced with some of life’s greatest challenges. I also continue to support the White Ribbon Campaign that sees men working to end violence against women by men, as well as various cancer research initiatives, the United Way and the Easter Seals 24-hour Relay for the Kids.
My business and community background reflect my belief in being fiscally conservative and socially liberal – values clearly supported by BC Liberal Party policies and practices.
I was born and raised in Winnipeg, earned my Honours degree in business from the University of Manitoba and began my business career with IBM Canada Ltd. in 1989. Since 1996, I have led three publicly-traded technology companies in turn-around situations. Most recently, I have served as President of the Banking Solutions Group of Open Solutions Canada.
I have observed the political landscape in British Columbia since we arrived here and was appalled by what took place during the decade leading to the election of the BC Liberals four years ago. Since 2001, we’ve come a long way toward recovering of our sense of provincial pride and accomplishment. Clearly there is more to do – and I am passionate about helping our government continue to make a positive difference for everyone in Port Moody-Westwood and all of British Columbia. Sitting as your MLA will give me that opportunity, and I thank you for it.
